Description	Ralph Nader was raised in Winsted, Connecticut, and attended Princeton University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in government and economics. In 1958, he earned his law degree from Harvard and, after military service, began to practice law. In 1964, Nader moved to Washington, DC, where he worked for Assistant Secretary of Labor Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In 1971 he founded Public Citizen, an advocacy organization focused on consumer safety and political reform. Nader first heard of William Proxmire in 1957, and in the years that followed, he and Sen. Proxmire took on similar causes. They were both advocated passage of the 1970 Fair Credit Reporting Act and the 1974 Equal Opportunity Credit Act. Other common causes included defeating the Supersonic Transport and legislation to regulate banking. Nader notes that Sen. Proxmire set a high standard for personal conduct and campaigning that has remained "beyond emulation." His walks across Wisconsin, his advocacy against government waste, his lack of scandalous behavior, his work ethic, and his savvy use of the press all served to make Sen. Proxmire, in Nader's opinion, an exemplary legislator.

Full Text	Well, yeah. I think he would have been a good President. But, you know, running for President means cutting a lot of deals on the way, and he wasn't into that. And it means raising money; a lot of money. Oh yeah, of course. Which it seems like he really didn't want to do. He couldn't walk across the United States! That's right. But it does sound like, from a lot of the legislation that he advocated, that transparency and regulation were certainly on his radar as important functions of government. Yeah, very much so, yeah. How was he viewed in your world? He was viewed as not a predicable ally, unless it was an issue of fairness. So, for example, if he had any policy that didn't deal with fairness, that dealt with something that didn't characterize, he'd sometimes go along with the establishment.
