An oral history interview with Carl Eifert

              exercise - this running and swimming - and he was very competitive. He told a story one time
about he was walking and he heard footsteps behind him. And as he speeded up, the footsteps
speeded up. He didn't want to be overtaken. And that's the way it worked, so -
So he was a very competitive person.
Very competitive that way, yes. Just like the business of not missing a vote, and having a speech
every day on the Genocide Treaty, which he didn't have to do anything with that. We wrote
them. And I suppose he looked at them and they just stuck them in the record. They were never
really delivered on the floor.
They were not delivered on the floor?
No, um-umm. (negatively) He'd just hand it to the record clerk and they're put in. That was my
impression. The parliamentarian my correct me, but I think that's true.
Okay. You started in '70, and that time, in my reading, was also a time when he was considering
a presidential run?
That came later.
So in '71?
