Well, it started out as a lark and ended as a lark.
Did he have presidential ambitions, do you think?
He would have liked to been President. Oh, yeah. Which politician wouldn't? And also which
Senator doesn't think he's smarter than the President, or more deserving of being President than
the President? But it started out - we were having a meeting and I made the comment, "You
know, if this is the situation, you ought to run for President." "Ehhh ..." And nothing much
happened, and then I happened to mention to Jack Anderson that Prox really should be
considered because he's smart. Anderson ran and called him about that. So Prox said, "Well, gee,
if Jack Anderson thinks I really should do it, maybe I ought to."

You started the whole thing!
It wasn't me. It was a group of us. And what happened, he went up to New Hampshire just to see
around, and he concluded that he couldn't raise the money. It would take too much money. And
he said, he could run a poor boy campaign and he thought his issues would engender a lot of
support, but he couldn't afford to run what he called a modern political campaign. And so it
folded.

Martin Lobel was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by I. Alan and Dorothy W. Lobel. In 1958, he graduated from high school and entered Boston University, where he majored in political science and was president of his class. Lobel then attended Boston University Law School, graduating cum laude in 1965. In 1966, after earning his LLM from Harvard Law School, Lobel taught at the University of Oklahoma School of Law. In 1967, he was chosen by the American Political Science Association as a Congressional Fellow, working for House Minority Leader Gerald R. Ford and Sen. William Proxmire. After completing his fellowship, Lobel joined Sen. Proxmire's staff as a legislative assistant. He was responsible for issues concerning energy, consumer affairs, and government waste and corruption. He worked on Sen. Proxmire's efforts to eliminate the oil import quota and the depletion allowance, which Proxmire considered unnecessary and wasteful government subsidies for the petroleum industry. These efforts earned Sen. Proxmire the enmity of the oil industry and its congressional advocates. In 1971, Lobel left Sen. Proxmire's staff to found Lobel, Novins & Lamont, a private law firm with a practice emphasizing public interest.
