Herbert C. Damon's History of the Milwaukee Light Guard
Damon, Herbert C.
This 319-page book is divided into two parts: the first half is devoted to the Light Guard's establishment in 1855, its prewar duties, and its service during the Civil War, while the second part concerns its re-organization in 1867 and its post-war existence. The book contains the history of the Milwaukee Light Guard, which became Co. A of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry, during the war, along with biographies of several of its commanders. These include General Rufus King (1814-1876), Captain John C. Starkweather (1830-1890), and George B. Goodwin (1834-1886). In addition, the book contains the Light Guard's Constitution and By Laws, a memoir by George B. Goodwin, and letters by veterans.
