Shawano County authorities called a news conference at noon Friday in regard to the take-over of the Alexian Brothers Novitiate near Gresham. In a joint statement, District Attorney Richard J. Stadelman and Sheriff Robert Sandy Montour, gave out the following information to representatives of the news media: ""There is a negotiation team presently meeting in a camper on neutral grounds between the Alexian Brothers Novitiate and the law enforcement perimeter. This negotiation team consists of Michael Spencer, Deputy Director of Emergency Police Service for the State of Wisconsin; Artley Skenadore, requested mediator provided by the office of the Governor of the State of Wisconsin. Mr. Skenadore is a former Brown County Sheriff; Brother Maurice, Alexian Brothers official from Elizabeth, New Jersey; Neil Bennett, Alexian Brothers Vice-President and Administrator of Finances. At this time we are not able to release any of the terms or conditions that are being discussed. ""On behalf of Sheriff Montour and myself, we wish to state that the situation is, at this time, under control, appears to be stable and there is no immediate danger to Shawano area residents. Every effort is being made to expedite the orderly removal of the occupants of the Alexian Novitiate under the terms to be worked out in the immediate hours. We wish to thank local law enforcement agencies throughout the state who have provided men and equipment, state agencies and also federal agencies who have given liaison assistance. ""Every effort is being made by law enforcement authorities to maintain the normal living routine of the people in the area. We do wish to thank those neighbors in the area for their cooperation and patience at this time. ""To this point, the incident has caused no known property damage or personal injury. Law enforcement authorities have not fired any shots and have been directed to maintain the status quo. We believe the situation can be resolved without jeopardizing the lives or property of any Shawano County residents or law enforcement officers involved in containing the situation.""
