Concessions bring new negotiations Tuesday afternoon negotiations at the Alexian Brothers Novitiate at Gresham resulted in a firmer cease-fire and agreement to begin full-scale negotiations on Wednesday morning according to Artley Skenadore, the head negotiator with the Menominee Warriors, the group who occupy the building. According to Skenadore this resumption of the talks, which had broken off during the weekend, came as a result of his offering ""some minor concessions."" The concessions included bringing in a very ""limited meal for those inside the Novitiate and the beginnings of the restoration of some heat and electricity."" The heat and utilities were cut off during the weekend. Skenadore also told an early evening press conference, which included representatives of the Shawano Evening Leader that he and the negotiating team had assessed medical conditions of the persons who are inside the Novitiate. They found them to be good with the exception of the existance of some medical problems of a few persons which had existed prior to their taking over the building. These problems would receive the treatment that they required, Skenadore said. In exchange for this limited tending of human needs, the negotiator said that agreement had been reached to begin full scale negotiations Wednesday morning. Asked by the Evening Leader what was the prime item sought by the Menominee Warrior Society to end their holding of the building, Skenadore said that while amnesty for those inside was discussed, it was clearly not their prime concern. Rather, they told him that their prime concern was that they be able to acquire the property from the Alexian Brothers for a hospital and alcohol and drug treatment center. Skenadore also said that the Menominee Warriors were pleased that the National Guard was handling the situation. He said to keep not only the letter but the spirit of the cease-fire that had been agreed to, the persons in the Novitiate had not fired on some of the law enforcement officers who knowingly or not had approached the building during the prior night. That approach was contrary to the ceasefire, but the persons inside had had voice contact with the officers and warned them away verbally so that the cease-fire would be honored.
