| Description | March On Milwaukee: This article examines events leading up to and following the NAACP Youth Council Fair Housing March in Milwaukee on August 28, 1967. African Americans faced blatant discrimination in housing, usually meeting with hostility or being refused housing altogether if they tried to leave segregated neighborhoods. They organized more than 200 demonstrations for fair housing laws, some led by vocal Catholic priest James E. Groppi (1930–1985), before passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 forced the city’s leaders to enact a fair housing law. The article tells the story of that campaign, and includes several photographs of marchers as well as political cartoons. (12 pages) |
