A Message to the Managers of the Organization
MANAGERS of the organization through¬ out the world, the more you develop the men under you the more you develop the company. The rising forces of youth, according to the immutable laws of life, must displace everyone. They must grow in¬ to the places which you have builded with your lives and they with their lives must build them still further, for the growth and development of the Company. Managers, the only way the men under you can develop to the full limit of their ability, is for them to be given responsibility. The only way they can grow strong is by carrying bur¬ dens. The only way they can become resource¬ ful is to have ends to meet on their own respon¬ sibility. Young men, given responsibility, will make mistakes, but mistakes, under the proper con¬ ditions, will become assets. The men must be assisted to convert their mistakes into property accounts instead of losses. If a man has no chance to fail, neither has he any chance to succeed. The best men are not developed in an atmos¬ phere of politics and favoritism. The good manager is fair and square. He develops men who are honest and above board, by being that way himself. Men will be trustworthy if they are trusted. Men will not need watching if they are not watched. Managers, by trusting and depend¬ ing upon their men, develop honesty, relia¬ bility, and greatness of character. Men can be developed by being led rather than driven. The slave-driving age has passed, but the age of leadership of man is just be¬ ginning. No stone wall of dignity stands around the good manager. It is easy for his men to come to him with their troubles and their plans. There is comradeship and love instead of awe and fear. The good manager lets the men under him believe there is a chance for them to grow if they do their part. Then he proves it to them. He advances them when they deserve it, and development is the result. Managers, you yourselves profit when your men de¬ velop. Many of you have earned a reputation for de¬ veloping men, and you have profited by it. So has the Company. So have the men. With good managers, everything goes forward.

Description | Harvester World magazine was first published by International Harvester Company in October of 1909. From 1909 to 1946, Harvester World functioned primarily as an employee magazine, carrying news from various factories, branch houses and dealerships around the world. The magazine included biographical sketches of employees; notices of retirements and promotions; announcements regarding new company initiatives or building projects; and a variety of other news relating to nearly every facet of the company’s world wide operations. The magazine was published by the company’s Advertising Department, and also functioned as a way for headquarters to communicate with dealerships. In 1946, the magazine was redesigned and eventually shifted from an employee magazine to a more customer-oriented focus. By the 1950s, most Harvester Articles were human interest stories centering on the people and organizations who used International Harvester products. At the same time, photography became an increasingly important element in the content and presentation of the magazine. The magazine was discontinued in 1969. |
