The State of New Jersey: Compiled from the Most Authentic Information
Full Title
The State of New Jersey: Compiled from the Most Authentic Information Compiled by Samuel Lewis. Engraved by W. Barker
Map Creator
Lewis, Samuel
Date Original
between 1795 and 1800
Description
Map of New Jersey showing counties, cities, towns, mills, landowners, roads, mountains, bays, rivers, and lakes. A few annotations dot the map, describing the land, such as one stretching along the south eastern coast reading "an extensive forest of pine trees." The division line between east and west Jersey is clearly marked. A offset image of the map in reverse is apparent, particularly around the title cartouche in the upper left corner. This is a common printer's mistake when a sheet was placed on top of another before the ink fully dried.
