Map of the city of the First Lake / drawn by J. Judson.
During the late 1830s, speculation in real estate flourished in southern Wisconsin. Developers platted imaginary communities on paper in the hopes of attracting investors. While visiting Mineral Point in 1837, British geologist George Featherstonhaugh was shown seven such maps of paper cities. The one shown here depicts a proposed city on the western shore of Lake Kegonsa in Dane County.
