Object Description
Title | Vogel--Lise Vogel papers, 1964-1965; Archives Main Stacks, SC3098 |
Author/Creator | Vogel, Lise |
Folder Description | This folder contains a really rich and diverse collection of documents relating to volunteer training, freedom schools and community centers, and the Mississippi Freedom Labor Union. It includes freedom school curricula, advice, teacher training materials, and flyers advertising freedom schools and community centers. An October 1964 appeal from the COFO project director to Freedom Summer volunteers who had returned home, asks for their continued help. A transcribed copy of a hate flyer put out by Shaw segregationists in September 1964 illustrates white resistance to the civil rights workers. The folder's excellent documents about the Mississippi Freedom Labor Union (1965) includes meeting minutes, budgets, and reports. Bonnie Guy's detailed account of her 1964 voter registration efforts and impressions in Ruleville is a well-written description of all the major issues of Freedom Summer told from a volunteer's point of view; lyrics to civil rights songs; SNCC press releases from Freedom Summer about organized white opposition to civil rights workers in Shaw; and a 1965 list of demands by black parents addressed to the Bolivar County School Board round out this collection. |
