Folder Description | 1964-1965 weekly and daily reports from many Madison County civil rights sites dominate this folder, providing a truly grassroots view of the daily work and frustrations of civil rights workers. Among the most interesting material are lists of the amounts of food and clothing sent to the South from the North to help people who had been fired from their jobs due to their involvement with the civil rights movement; descriptions of activities in freedom schools during their opening days; stories told by African Americans being canvassed for voter registration; completed voter canvassing forms; lists of freedom school students; reports on Farmers' League activities and attempts to maintain an African-American Chamber of Commerce; thefts from the Canton Freedom House and security precautions not being followed; the preparations that went into a Madison County Freedom Day Rally; testing restaurants, hotels, and parks after passage of the Civil Rights Act to see whether they would serve African Americans; the Canton deposition hearing for the Congressional Challenge; a Canton project financial report; a report on the Madison County convention and the Canton sewing project; and efforts to desegregate the schools. An unusual affidavit describes a black woman's excellent treatment at a white hospital in Jackson and the kindness shown to her husband who was allowed to wait in the white waiting room. The folder also includes flyers calling for a 1965 anniversary picnic for the MFDP precincts in Madison County, for voting on a state-wide referendum on voter registration requirements, for protesting county registrar Foote Campbell's continued use of the old voter registration form after passage of the Voting Rights Act, and for people to go to Washington, D.C., to support the Congressional Challenge. The most persistent note in all of these reports has to do with the lack of adequate transportation for civil rights workers: cars are constantly broken down, unavailable, or damaged. One ingenious worker orders a bike from Sears, Roebuck Co. which also soon breaks down. |
