Title | Freedom Information Service--WATS reports, January 1964-June 1964 (Freedom Information Service records, 1962-1979; Historical Society Library Microforms Room, Micro 780, Reel 1, Segment 1-4) |
Author/Creator | Freedom Information Service |
Folder Description | Focusing primarily on Mississippi events and recounted in their raw, undigested state, these Freedom Information Service records of January-June 1964 WATS line messages to and from district COFO offices deal with internal matters, like the lack of transportation for taking people to courthouses to register to vote or to attend various meetings. Some deal with rumored shootings, actual car accidents, and sheriffs of specific counties who refuse to accept poll taxes from Negroes. The familiar Mississippi Summer Project running summary of incidents (through July 16, 1964) is one of the documents here as well. After Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney disappear, the messages concern the arrivals and departures and locations of staff members and volunteers, as well as heightened tension and violent incidents by resistant whites. There's a suggestion around scanned pages 215-217 that Buford Posey told some civil rights workers about the possible involvement of Sheriff Rainey and his deputy Cecil Price in the murders of the three civil rights workers and that the civil rights workers passed on that information to the FBI. |
