Object Description
Title | Smith--Judge Harold M. Cox, 1964 (Benjamin E. Smith papers, 1955-1967; Archives Main Stacks, Mss 513, Box 2, Folder 6) |
Author/Creator | Smith, Benjamin Eugene |
Folder Description | The legal correspondence between out-of-state civil rights lawyers and Mississippi judges about whether or not the lawyers can practice law in the state and about whether each party is acting in good faith and with justice as a goal, is eye-opening. Included in the folder are the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi's 1962 "Rule Regulating Admission of Attorneys" the July 1963 rule on the Mississippi Secretary of State as the agent for service of process, an October 1963 order that divides court business between Southern District judges and sets the times they will be available, and the December 1963 rule for removing cases from the state courts to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. William Kunstler's letter protesting Judge Cox's April 1964 decision not to let him practice law before the U.S. District Court of Southern Mississippi is typical of the correspondence. |
