Y. 10010 212-675-6780 February 27, 1970 ASU news: Mitch Smith, rho had been sentenced to 2 months in the stockade after putting up a political defense at a special court-martial for AVOL, was released with the last 6 weeks of his sentence suspended for 6 months. Mitch is out and back organizing at Ft. Sackson. - The brass at Ft. Lev-is is trying to lash out at the local ASU chapter of the ASU and all GI dissenters, Steve Gilbert, former editor of FTA, the Ft. Knox paper, was sentenced at a court-martial to 5 years for refusing to go to Korea. '"ads Carson, an A.fU organizer whose story is bold in the last BOND» was given a five month sentence for distributing Fed-Up. Bruce McLean, an AWOL ASU organizer who testified at the People's Trial, turned himself in at Ft. Lewis, and was shanghaied to Vietnam on Feb 19. The ASU has taken steps to have Bruce brought back. 'Atty. Jim Vonasch of Seattle filed a writ of habeous corpus and will hav a day in court on Mar. S. MhxxX The national office put Atty. vonAsch in touch with David Rein, who handled the cases of Isaac Bae/r. . -• John Levis and Andy Stapp attaaded a meeting at the National Lawyers Guild Conference in Washington, D.C, where John addressed a military workshop of 150 lawyers, along with atr ys Mike Kennedy and ?"-nk Disuvero and Josh ;"ouli of the Oleo Strut coffee house.
