The New Mobilization Committee has formed a Task Force to help GIs in their extremely important struggle against the war, the military and the government. A GI questionnaire was mailed to each GI group for which we had an address, asking then if they ■would support a day of nationally co-ordinated activities at military installations operated by the United States government. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of such a day and May 16th, ftrmed Forces Day, was decided upon as the most desirable date. Traditionally, U.S. military bases are "open" on this date, making actions there much more effective. Also, GIs will be on "holiday routine" and thus more able to participate. Thus far, we have heard from over fifteen bases across the country whose GI groups have begun working to make May 16th a tremendous success for the GI anti-war movement. We see the purpose of this date as being primarily twofold: 1) To show the world the true sentiment of the GIs of the United States - the men and women who are forced to fight the national leaders' wars; 2) To provide a visible action upon which GI organizing can flourish at an even greater pace at every base. The enclosed leaflet has been sent out to our key contacts across th- country. It. will give you on idea of the variety of actions being planned and their wide distribution. The Mew Mobilization has been extremely successful in the past in mustering huge numbers of people to demonstrate their distaste of Amerikan policy. For May 16th, the New Mobe will be utilizing this same ability to come to the support of the GI movement, a movement which ranks the highest in enraging and frightening the leaders of this country. « We urge you to consider seriously the possibility of working with GIs in your area for actions around this date. The presence of actions on May 16th in Countries outside of the legal territory of the United States which would center upon the U.S. troops there would bring to the people's attention the reality of U.S. imperialisi much more vividly than mere words can. Should you decide that such an action is both feasible and desirable
