MEMO TO W.R.L. MEMBERS OCTOBER 16 AND BEYOND 9/22/67 this is a man he is a poor creature t you are not to kill him this is a man he has a hard time upon the earth, you are not to kill him Kenneth Patchen Every man who resists war will find his own way to do it. Some WRL members file for their CO. classification and some refuse to cooperate with the draft at all. We have, during the past year, put a great deal of work into informing draft age men of their rights to file for the CO. classification. ("Uptight With The Draft" is now in its fourth printing - 100,000 copies are in circulation). We will continue that entirely legal campaign. We also support those hundreds or thousands of young men who, on October 16, will make a complete break with the draft by returning their cards. Every one of those men faces prison. The Sept./Oct. WRL News carries a feature on this, listing the addresses and phone numbers of local Resistance groups. If you misplace the News write us for The Resistance group nearest you. If you are of draft age and are prepared for the risks involved, get in touch with The Resistance. IF YOU ARE PAST 35 OR ARE A WOMAN — You can still join The Resistance, not just to the draft, but to the war system at every possible level. Wives and girl friends and parents can physically block induction centers. Priests, rabbis, pastors can hold a prayer service in front of napalm plants, closing them down and accepting arrest. College professors can organize faculty strikes to protest the war and the involvement of the academic community in the war system. If young men refuse to let their lives be conscripted, we can refuse to let our money be conscripted through taxes. The resistance to war takes many forms, some legal and some civilly disobedient. We support all nonviolent pretests and actions aimed at ending war. These young men deserve more support from us than Christmas cards once they are in jail. They have moved from dissent to resistance. Let us move with them. SUPPORT STATEMENTS — Prepare a "statement of complicity" to be signed by community leaders and released to the press on October 16. Such statements are illegal because they are an effort to provide aid and comfort to those interfering with selective service. We have copies of "support statementd1 if you need an example to help prepare one for your community. IN NEW YORK — The men of The Resistance will gather in Foley Square on Oct- ober 16 to return their cards. The exact time is not yet known. There will be a legal picket line in support of their action. Phone us for information, PRISON TAPE NOW READY — Men who face prison or who take that risk have many questions about what prison life is like. The WRL has a new tape dealing with the problems of prison life as related by men who have been through the experience. Excellent for group discussions. 2 hours, 3# ips, two track. %6, WAR RESISTERS LEAGUE - 5 Beekman Street - New York City IOO38. CO. 7-^592
