"73- MADISON VETERANS for PEACE ^^ Dave Myhre - chairman pro tern ■ I must apologize for not getting out a news-letter last week in time to publicize the last meeting. In anticipation of a mail strike, I didn't take time to write one up. I goofed. In spite of that, our last meeting, held Thursday, March 26th, attracted quite a few members and we got quite a bit done. Our drive towards incorporating as a non-profit corporation is shaping up. We now know what we have to do to get a national charter, and we have accepted the following as our organizational guidelines: 1. VFP is an organization dedicated to the pursuit and preservation of peace and the general welfare of the whole World. 2. We believe that a person is never discharged from duty, honor and respect to all mankind. 3. We should x^ork for the elimination of violence and repression as political and economic tools. 4. We should apply political pressure and sway public opinion to try to achieve peace. 5. We should advocate effective public review and control of military policy and spending. 6. We should work to insure the Constitutional Rights of all individuals, especially those of armed forces personnel (under the G.I. Bill of Rights). 7. As veterans, many of whom have witnessed the true horrors of war, we oppose the glorification of waj^ by our society. We must work to convince our fellow citizens that political, economic and social problems must be solved by more rational and humane methods than those employed by the military. 8. We should work for the general welfare of veterans, especially those who are disabled. The above goals of Madison Veterans for Peace will be drawn up in a charter form and submitted to our Congressmen, who have the power to grant us a legal charter. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Two meetings ago, we broke up into groups* to form our new committee system. This system will enable us to spread the work around lightly enough that we don't have to severely over-work anyone and yet we can get a lot done. At present we have four(4) committees - Publicity, which is in charge of getting us into the news; Education, which will compile a speakers bureau and gather literature; Veterans Affairs, which is concentrating now on V.A. Hospitals' inadequacies and G.I. Bill benefits; and Membership, which is going to launch an all-out drive for members. If you haven't signed with any of these committees and have a couple hours a week that you could volunteer to working with us, call Karl Gutknecht or Denny Butts for Publicity, Ed Dusowsky for Education, Jon Walters for Veterans Affairs, or Chuck Goranson for Membership.
