An Oral History Interview with
JOHN DANIEL FINERTY
Interviewer: .Anita Hecht, Life History Services
Recording Date: April 23, 2009
Place: Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Length: 2.5 hours
John Daniel Finerty was raised in Chicago. He attended Marquette University, where he first met
William Proxmire, and earned a B.S. degree in political science and speech in 1961. He then
entered Marquette Law School and became involved in the Democratic Party. He volunteered for
John W. Reynolds, Jr.'s, gubernatorial campaign and was active in fundraising and campaigning
efforts for William Proxmire's senate campaigns.
.After earning his J.D. in 1964, Finerty worked at Hersh, Correy & Bachman while also serving as
Sen. Proxmire's campaign treasurer. From 1966 to 1968, Finerty served as Sen. Proxmire's legal
counsel. He was responsible for dealing with constituents and their legal questions and for
running the Senator's Wisconsin office.
In 1971, Finerty started his own law firm, now Freibert, Finerty & St. John, but remained in touch
with Sen. Proxmire's office. Over the years, Finerty was involved in campaign strategy sessions
and other political discussions with Sen. Proxmire.
He considers Sen. Proxmire a leader in the regulation of consumer credit, liability under credit
card debt, and credit reporting. He also believes that Sen. Proxmire was ahead ofhis time in
disclosing his income tax returns to the public every year, both at the state and federal levels, and
that he was an early proponent of campaign finance reform.
