Description
This map appeared in Matthew Forney Steele's American Campaigns, volume 2 (Washington, D.C.: War Dept., 1909). Specific dates and times shown in the Title field are derived from citations to the maps in the text of volume 1. Steele wrote in the preface, ""None of the maps were drawn originally for these lectures; all are photographic reproductions of either official maps or maps accompanying works that have been consulted in the preparation of the lectures... In most cases the colored blocks and lines representing troops and routes of march have been added specially for the lectures... the main purpose having been merely to suggest, by means of blue [Union] and red [Confederate] blocks, the relative positions of hostile troops on a battle-field or in a theater of operations.""
