The Iron Brigade and Battery B.
It was at Antietam that Gen. E. S. Bragg was
wounded and Gen. Gibbon dropped from his horse and
sighted one of Battery B's guns, loaded double canister.
Then the legs and arms and rail fences showed that hell
had let loose. Near that rail fence, and if I remember
aright, a certain Chaplain of the brigade who was always at hand when the boys were double shooting,
sleeves rolled up, working their guns to the best, when
firing, one said: "Now, boys, give 'em hell." The
Chaplain overheard the remark, when he began to reprimand the gunner: "How do you expect to have the support of the Divine Frovidence when you use such
language?" "To hell with the Divine Providence, the
Iron Brigade supports us."
The Captain and His Dog.
The gallant Capt. Werner Von Bachelle of Company
F, 6th Wisconsin, had a young dog that was presented
to him while encamped near Fredericksburg. The dog
started on the march from there and followed his master through several battles until Antietam. Here the
brave man fell, and when the struggle ended the scene
