Headquarters Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Wisconsin, Madison, April 9, 1912. The swift flight of time is speeding us to another Memorial Day with its sacred memories and solemn observances. Since the last, many thousands of our comrades have finished life's campaign and Mother Earth embraces their mortal bodies. "Sleep on, embalmed and sacred dead, Dear as the blood ye gave; No impious footstep here shall tread The greensward of your grave. "Nor shall your glory be forgot . While Fame her record keeps, And Glory points the hallowed spot Where Valor proudly sleeps. "Nor wreck, nor change, nor winter's blight, Nor time's remorseless doom, ^Afŵ» Shall dim one ray of holy light That gilds your glorious tomb." ' J J To those of us who for a few more days or a few more years plod •■ on in life's forced march comes with impressive significance the poet's admonition: "So live that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death. Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him-, and lies down to pleasant dreams." Your Commander urges each post in the' department at once to appoint an efficient committee to arrangé for the proper celebration of \e anniversary. *- Enlist the co-operation of all auxiliary and affiliated organizations Q^ f 5 ld of a11 good citizens. ^5~ F302
