Description | During the Civil War, each regiment carried large ledger books called "Regimental and Descriptive Rolls" that listed every soldier and what happened to him. In 1886, after the war, these handwritten "muster rolls" were set in type and printed in two large volumes containing a great deal of information on every soldier. The volume linked below is a simple alphabetical index to them that shows the regiment, company and rank of each soldier. Elsewhere at Turning Points in Wisconsin History you can find volume 1 and volume 2 of the muster rolls, which contain the full information about each person as he appeared on the roster of his military unit. |
