Description | When Marquette's report on his 1673 Mississippi River voyage appeared in print for the first time in 1681, it was accompanied by this map. Their publisher, Melchisédec Thevenot, had traveled widely himself and made a successful business out of printing the reports of other explorers. This is the first printed map to show the full length of the Mississippi River. Green Bay is at the bottom right and New Orleans at the upper left. Use the "Zoom & Pan" button to see more detail |
