| Description | Although the sport of curling dates back to the 15th century, the modern version originated in Scotland in the 17th century. Scottish immigrants brought the game to North America where it spread across the northern United States and Canada. The first curling club in the United States was organized in Detroit in the 1820s, and by 1855, curling clubs flourished in New York, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Portage. The Grand National Curling Club of America, organized in the 1860s, held annual meetings and produced a yearly guide that detailed the previous year's team records. This edition, from the 1878-79 season, includes charming descriptions of the Portage and Milwaukee clubs in addition to general information about the organization and the rules of curling. |
