Description | M.C. Rotier first began publishing his monthly journal, The Pneumatic, in Milwaukee in 1892. Intended for all those "interested in wheeling" ("pneumatic" in this case referring to the compressed air that filled a bicycle's tires), The Pneumatic sought to cover topics of interest to the rising generation of bicycle enthusiasts. Rotier had grand ambitions for his paper, stating in his opening salutation to the first issue, that he would secure correspondents in all of the major cycling centers of the western world. In the 1890s, Wisconsin was becoming a center of bicycling in the United States, as cyclists formed clubs and advocated for road improvements. Consisting of travel information, club happenings, technological advances, and cycling gossip, The Pneumatic was the source for Wisconsin bicycling enthusiasts. |
