972 HISTORY OF WINNEBAGO COUNTY. Jjand Company, and was interested in many other concerns. He Avas Avell known as a financier and manufacturer throughout the state. He was married on January 28, 1873, to Aliss Alary BrcAA^er and departed this life on the 20th of Februaiy, A, D, 1907, He AA^as sur¬ vived by his AvidoAv and three sons, Harry B. HcAvitt, John H. HcAvitt, of Hoquiaiii, and Alorgan F. HcAAdtt, of Alenasha, AA^isconsin; two sisters. Airs, Alary Syme and Airs, D, L. Kimberly, of Neenah, AA^is- consin, and a brother, Henry Hewitt, Jr., of Tacoma, AVashington. John Joseph Herrmann, a prosperous farmer and substantial citizen of AA^innebago county, AA^'isconsin, Avas born in Hesse-Darm¬ stadt, Germany, April 24, 1841, the son of John and Barbara Herr¬ mann, both natives of GerniaiiA', and farmers by occupation. In 1867 John J,, Avitli his father and mother and Avife, came to the United States and settled on forty acres of land in section 33, Clayton toAAai- ship, AA^innebago county,, AA^isconsin, Here the father died at the age of eighty-four, but the mother returned to German}^ and there died. Later .Air, Herrmann bought his present farm in sections 28 and 33, AAdiich he has improved and developed into one of the finest and most productive farms of the count}', having erected a substantial and commodious dAvelling house, good barns and outbuildings, and supplied Avith all the equipments of a model modern farm. Besides general farming Air, Herrniaiin has devoted himself espe¬ cially to breeding and raising live stock. He is a Democrat in politics, but has taken no part in political affairs except to perform his duties as a good citizen. He is identified Avith the German Catholic church of Neenah. In Februaiy, 1867, Air. Herrniann married Aliss Anna Alary Eber- hardt, a native of Germany. Of six children born to them John, born December 15, 1867, is a farmer. He married Alargaret Baumann and they liaA^e one child, named Jobn AA'illiani. Barbara is married to Air. AA^illiam Hall, of Neenah, and they have had children, named respectively Alary and Barbara, the latter noAV deceased. The other surviving child. Alary A., is the Avife of Air. George Alurphy, of Nee¬ nah, and they have Iavo children, viz.: John J. and Barbara. Air. Herrmann since coming to AA^innebago county has Avitnessed its development from a state of comparative Avildiiess to a populous and rich farming coniiiiunity, supplied Avith conveniences of Avhich no one at that day had even a remote conception. And among the sturdy men AAdio have had a part in bringing about the wonderful changes that have been Avrought none is entitled to greater credit than he.
