BIOGRAPHY, 979 B, Third AVisconsin Cavalry, serving until the close of the Avar, In 1866 he began logging AAdth his brother AVilliam AV. and continued Avith him until 1868, Avhen he decided to embark in business for him¬ self. In 1882 he formed the conipany of Hollister, Amos & Co., bought Ripley & Alead^s saAAanill at Oshkosh, AVisconsin, and began manu¬ facturing lumber, Hollister, Amos & Co,, of which Colonel Hollister is now the sole owiier, is still engaged in active business and is operat¬ ing one of the four surAdAdng saAAmiills in the city of Oshkosh. In 1883 he became a partner in the firm of R. McAIillen & Co., man¬ ufacturers of lumber, sash, doors and blinds, but AAdthdrcAV from this firm in 1887. The folloAAdng year he formed the conipany of Hollis¬ ter, Jewell & Co., ex-Senator Philetus Sawyer being associated with him in this business. They purchased a limit of 90,500 acres in the province of Ontario, Canada, and the same year erected a double-band sawmill at Garden RiA^er, northern Ontario, This firm manufactured lumber there for five years, about 20,000,- 000 feet per year, but the mill Avas burned in 1893, and since then has not been rebuilt. In connection with .Leander Choate, J. H. Jenkins, George T, BroAvn, A, E. Thompson and others. Colonel Hol¬ lister established the Choate-Hollister Furniture Conipany, AAdiich was burned in 1899, being himself vice-president and general manager of that company. Colonel Hollister is also president and'general manager of the Keshena Improvement Company and of the Wolf River Boom Company. He is a director in many of the large business institutions of Oshkosh, including the Old National Bank, Oshkosh Tool Alanufacturing CompauA', Winnebago Traction Company and the R, AIcAIillen Company. Colonel Hollister has always been a Republican in politics and was a member of Governor Upham^s and Governor SchofiekTs staffs, with the rank of colonel. He is a prominent Mason and a member of the G, A, R, and the Elks and Hoo-Hoo lodges. In the year 1868 he married Aliss Katie G, Smith, avIio Avas of German descent, having moved from the old country to the United States at an early age. Five children were born to them—Raymond A,, AA-'inifred S,, Carl AV«, S. Rex and Earl, all of AAdiom are liAdng except Earl, Avho died at the age of five years. The mother died No¬ vember 19, 1896. Colonel Hollister was married a second time, to Lottie Irene Loomis, in 1897. One child, Edith Loomis, AA'as born to them, August 30, 1904, All. of Colonel Hollister's children reside in the city of Oshkosh. R. A, Hollister is a niember of the law firm of AA^eed & Hollister; AA^inifred S. is uoav married to AA'illiam C.
