Horn Avith others incorporated the business as the Oshkosh Bedding and Couch Company, of which he was made president, and Avith increased facilities extended the scope of business, which uoav reaches throughout AA^isconsin and northern Michigan. Air. Horn is careful, conservative and methodical in his affairs, and in all his business dealings is known for his uprightness and fairness. He is a man of fine personal qualities, social and compan¬ ionable, affable and congenial, loves good comradeship and good cheer and is loyal to his friends. He is identified Avitli the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Oslil^osh Yacht Club, and at one time served as captain of Company F. In politics he is afiiliated widi no party, but supports for office the candidate whom he thinks most Avorthy. In 1883 Air, Horn married Aliss Ida, daughter of August Streicl, of Oshkosh, They liaA^e three children. Adz,: Harry C, Avho is con¬ nected Avith the company of which his father is president; Esther S, and Orville C. J. J. Hughes, who is a resident of Utica township, is the son of J. H, and Ellen (Jones) Hughes, who Avere both natives of Whales, They came to the United States in an early day and settled in Ncav York state, where their son, J. J,, was born on June 8, 1859, After farming there in Ncav York for a few years, in 1861 they moved to AVisconsin and located in AATnnebago county, farming first in Algoma township for about four years, and then moved to Omro township, where they remained eight years. They then came to Utica township and bought the farm AA^hich is now owned by our subject; it contains 160 acres, 100 of Avliich is under cultivation. The place is well im¬ proved by cultivation and good residence and outbuildings, the father having left it in good condition at his death in 1897, Airs, Hughes, mother of our snbject, died in 1894, Since the death of his father Air, Hughes has been continually adding to the improvements, and at this time has a model and up-to- date farm. He carries on general farming and deals in blooded stock. His hogs are Poland-China and his cattle are of high breed princi¬ pally. He is a sn.ccessful farmer, stock raiser and all-around business man. During the earlier days, Avlien that part of Wisconsin experi¬ enced the boom in the logging and lumber industries, Air. Hughes spent some nine winters living in the woods. Always interested in the public Avelfare, he has never aspired to
