1040 HISTORY OF AA^INNEBAGO COUNTY. milling operations. In 1890 Air. AlcCune took up his residence in Oshkosh, AAdiere he first engaged in the business of drilling wells, but after a fcAv months turned his attention to the real estate trade, to AAdiich he has ever since continuously devoted himself Avith marked success, doing a general business in that line. In 1888, AA^hile living at Lake Superior, Air. AlcCune married Aliss Louise Husson, of that place, a lady highly esteemed by a Avide circle of friends, for her many Avonianly virtues and her social and domes¬ tic qualities. Air. AlcCune is a man of pleasing personality, prompt and busi¬ nesslike, and in all his business relations maintains the confidence and respect of all Avitli Avlioni he deals by his upright, honorable and manly methods. Robert MclVIillen, whose prominence as a manufacturer and whose activity in all lines leading toward the progress of Oshkosh have made him worthy of special mention in this history, was born in AA^arren county. New York, on September 26, 1830. His grand¬ father AIcAIillen was a native of Scotland, and settled in this country near Lake George, New York state, shortly before the close of the eighteenth century, and there his father grcAV up. His mother Avas Alary Armstrong before her marriage, and Avas the daughter of a merchant AAdio removed to AA^arreii county, Avhere he spent the re¬ mainder of his life. Robert AIcAIillen passed his early life in AA^arren county, where he developed a vigorous manhood and engaged in farming. His father Avas also a farmer, and in addition to that carried on quite an extensive lumber business, looking after that enterprise in Avinters AAdiile his son, Robert, attended to the farm work, and received what education he could. His adA^'antages in this line Avere limited, Iioav- ever, to attendance at the district schools, but as he was an apt pupil and made good use of his opportunities, he acquired a good knowledge of the English branches, and began life fairly Avell equipped for a business career. In 1853 he Avas married to Aliss Alice Johnson, his age being then tAventy-three years. She Avas a native of AVarren county also, and they soon afterAvard determined to come west, hav¬ ing previously had rather poor success at farming, so that when reaching AA^isconsiii in 1854 he Avas strongly inclined to folloAv other pursuits. His fin^aiices being comparatively Ioav at that time, he secured eniployment at the carpenter trade and folloAved this busi¬ ness for the next fcAV years, during which time he saved sufficient money to purchase a home; this he did, but in 1857 the financial de¬ pression Avhich prevailed throughout the country seriously affected
