316 HISTORY OF WAUPACA COUNTY City Clerk Spearbraker furnishes much interesting matter. From the special data which he gathered for this work it is learned that the* fire department w^as organized as a bucket brigade in 1880, and that its appa¬ ratus then consisted of a hand pump. In May, 1887, a volunteer depart¬ ment of twenty-five men was organized, and a steamer purchased of the American Fire Engine Company. In the earlier years, before the water¬ works were built and afforded fire protection (1903), the little steamer A View on Main Street was brought into considerable use. Two hook and ladder trucks, three hose reels and about 4,000 feet of good fire hose, with other small equip¬ ment, are also included in the present outfit. Water and Electric Light Plant The water and electric light plant is municipal property and operated jointly. The water supply is from artesian wells along Pigeon River, and the works are operated by gravity and direct pressure. The power is furnished by an American compound duplex pump, with a capacity of 2,460 gallons per minute; pressure for domestic purposes, 50 pounds, and for fire protection, 100 pounds. There are about 70 hydrants in the city and some 20,000 feet of water mains. The electric light service covers the full twenty-four hours, and em¬ braces two miles of ornamental lighting on New London Street, according
