Henry Delevan Quandt of Royalton is a veteran lumberman. During his time he has witnessed perhaps as much of the clearing away of the great forests which once encumbered Wisconsin lands as has fallen to the lot of any other individual. As a timber cruiser he has experienced the dangers and hardships of that occupation, which from its very nature is a pioneer work, and takes a man far from the accus¬ tomed haunts of civilized men and into the very heart of the wilderness. His interests as a lumberman have been both in the north and in the south. Up to 1900 he was connected with lumbering chiefly in this state, though he also went into the forests of Aiinnesota, His services were required in estimating timber in Northern Wisconsin long before that country, was surveyed or opened for settlement. Air, Quandt was born in Alontgomery County, New York, in 1856, but has had his home for the most part in Royalton for forty-four years. His parents were Jacob C, and Sarah (Bennett) Quandt, who were also natives of Alontgomery County, New York. In 1865 the family moved to Clinton, Iowa, after a year to Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and four years later they came to Weyauwega. Jacob Quandt and wife subsequently removed to AVaushara County, and both of them died there. He was a farmer by occupation, but for several years before his death had lived retired. Their children were: Jose¬ phine, James, Isabel, Henry D., Myrtle, Ellsworth and Grace, Henry D, Quandt received most of his early education in AVinnebago County, He early went into the woods and acquired all the woodcraft and knowledge of timber conditions such as only the old time lumber¬ men now possess. Besides his activities in AVisconsin he was from 1900 to 1907 engaged in the timber business in the State of Alabama. On returning from the South Air. Quandt bought the Gordonier Hotel at Waupaca, changing its name to the Delevan House, taking his middle name for that purpose. As the Delevan House it is still known. Por another year he conducted a hotel at Rhinelander in Northern AVis¬ consin, then moved to his farm near Royalton for a couple of years, and once more was engaged in looking after his interests in the lumber field in Alabama for two years. In July, 1915, Mr. Quandt returned
