BIOGRAPHICAL Albert Alden, Jr., is the oldest of the Rve children of Hon. Al¬ bert Alden, Sr., and his wife, Caroline (Fairservice) Alden, both families among the earliest and the representative citizens of Wau¬ kesha county. Albert Alden, Sr., was born in Portland, Me., March 5, iSii, received a liberal education and engaged in mercantile busi¬ ness, having spent the four years preceding his coming to Wisconsiri in New Orleans. In .1842 he came to Delafield and opened a general store, the first in the village, continuing in this line of business until 1846. He was the first postmaster in the village, the first sheriff of the county, a member of the first state legislature of 1849, ^^d was twice elected to the same position in later years, representing his district in 1858 and again in i860. In the meantime he had spent two years in California, going to the coast in 1850, and was a clerk of the legislature there also. He filled numerous other public posi¬ tions and was one of the men whose influence was strongly felt dur¬ ing the formative years in the making of this great commonwealth. He was a large property holder, his home being beautifully located near the village of Delafield and the shores of Lake Nagawicka. His wife died on Nov. 8, 1891, aged seventy years, and he did not long survive her, his death occurring Jan. 4, 1892, having nearly com¬ pleted his eighty-first year. Their children were Albert, Jr., Theo- dosia, who died young, Caroline Louisa, Virginia and Agnes M. The last named married Rev. Osgood Pearson and both are now de¬ ceased. They left three sons, John Alden, Albert William and David Adams, all residents of West Roxbury, Mass., where their father was the pastor of the Episcopal church. Caroline Louisa is unmar¬ ried and lives with her brother Albert. Virginia, now Mrs. W. F. Brewster; is the mother of three children; Alden F. is a graduate of West Point, and an officer at Milwaukee, Wis.; Caroline resides in Milwaukee, as does Thomas Edison, who is engaged in manufacturing in that city. Albert was born on a farm in section 18, town of Dela¬ field, Aug. 28, 1844, in the same house in which occurred the birth of Lieut. William B. Gushing, whose brilliant achievement in the navy, during the Civil war, has given distinction to the place of his birth. Agnes and Theodosia were born in the same room. He has spent his whole life in the vicinity of his birth, remaining with his parents until their death, was appointed administrator of the estate and is now the owner of a farm of 115 acres, which since 1893 he has rented, and occupies the comfortable home—formerly owned by the Sperry family^—which his mother purchased previous to her death. 345
