History |
Like many late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Wisconsin women artists, Hazel Miller Hanneman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1891 to Jerome and Anna Miller, she married Frederick H. Hanneman (1890-1980) in 1916. The couple moved to Mount Horeb in 1917, where Hazel conducted classes in oil, watercolor, and china painting and Frederick worked as the director for the Mount Horeb City Band, the organist for the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the music teacher for area schools. Between 1870 and 1920, thousands of American women took up the art of china painting--the decoration of porcelain tablewares and other household objects with hand-painted overglaze. An entire industry sprang up to support this trend. China painters could purchase porcelain blanks and supplies from mail order catalogs or local shops, take lessons in the craft from trained artists, and read periodicals and instruction manuals to learn about new techniques and designs. China painting was an amateur pursuit for some women, but others, such as Hanneman, parlayed the craft into a serious artistic career. |
