History |
According to the owner, this cupboard was acquired at auction from the Fjeld farm in southeast Dane County, Wisconsin. The attribution is assigned based on the similarity of the applied moldings to those initially found on a chest of drawers known to have been made by Lie for his son Halvor Lie (illustrated in Bakken, p. 101). Before immigrating to the United States in 1848, Aslak Olsen Lie achieved success as a skilled cabinetmaker, decorative painter and metalworker in Valdres, Norway. Lie became one of the pioneers of the migration from Valdres to Wisconsin when, at the age of fifty, he relocated his family to the tiny Dane County community of Klevenville. In this enclave of Norwegian settlement, he provided local families with furniture in both traditional Norwegian forms and popular American styles. An 1875 photograph of Lie and his family outside their Klevenville home is part of the image archives of the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHi-27635): http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/whi/fullRecord.asp?id=27635 |
