History | This ironstone dish was manufactured in England, possibly by Joseph Clementson (1798-1871) and imported to Madison by Jairus Cassius Fairchild (1801-1862), the first mayor of the city of Madison. As a young man, Fairchild left New York for Ohio, then settled permanently in Wisconsin in 1846. In 1826 he married Sally Blair, sister of Franklin J. Blair, who established a successful crockery shop in Milwaukee in 1843. Fairchild's brother-in-law's imported wares included ironstone transferware in the Udina pattern, manufactured by Joseph Clementson of Stoke-on-Trent, England. According to the History of Dane County (1880), in 1856 Fairchild owned a building on Main Street in Madison "occupied by D. C. Poole, dry goods and crockery." |
