History | The written record reveals that silversmith and jeweler Albert B. Van Cott operated a successful but rather peripatetic business throughout the Midwest. Born in New York ca. 1811, federal census records place him in Racine, Wisconsin in 1850, Milwaukee in 1860, Rockford, Illinois in 1870, and Chicago in 1880. In 1851, Van Cott, listed as a resident of Racine, presented the "best exhibition of jewelry" at the Wisconsin State Agricultural Convention. At the same event in 1852, listed as a resident of Milwaukee, he presented the "best exhibition of silver ware." |
