History | Joseph Randolph Treat is listed as a merchant in the 1850 federal census for Milwaukee's Third Ward. He was born in Monroe County, New York in 1810. The family lived in Toronto, Canada and Michigan before settling permanently in Milwaukee in the late 1830s or early 1840s. According to the Pioneer History of Milwaukee (1884), Treat acquired the "jewelry and Yankee notions" store operated by the firm of Daggett and Richardson on East Water Street in 1848. At the first Wisconsin State Agricultural Convention in 1851, Treat exhibited "an assortment of jewelry" and received an award for "best gold watch". |
