Description
Child-sized spindle-back rocking chair with ball finials. The curved crest is slotted into the turned stiles and reinforced with small nails. The bent arms are attached to the stiles and seat with screws. The simply turned legs are tenoned into the rockers.
History
This chair descended in the family of maker Elias Maki. According to family history, Maki was born in Toysa, Finland in 1871 and married Anna Kaisa Hannuksela. According to family history, he lived in Brantwood, Price County, Wisconsin from 1899-1916, and later settled in Saskatchewan, Canada. Maki appears as a farmer in 1900 and 1910 federal census records for the Town of Knox, Price County, Wisconsin, listed with an immigration date of 1889. Two examples of furniture among the Koskela House collections were made by Maki's cousin Vale Jokela, who also came to Brantwood in 1899.
