All elements are constructed of pine, painted an off-white/cream color, and ornamented with narrow strips of applied resin molding in floral shapes. The drawers in the case furniture are joined with square machine-sawn dovetails; metal pulls are attached with screws. |
History | This extensive bedroom suite was used by the Upham family of Marshfield, Wisconsin and remains on view in the Upham Mansion, now an historic house museum operated by the North Wood County Historical Society. According to tradition, the furniture manufacturing branch of the Upham Manufacturing Company developed this line of furniture after Mary Upham, first wife of company founder William Henry Upham (1841-1924), saw a similar style on a trip to France. The Upham Manufacturing Co. was central to the economic growth of the city of Marshfield from the 1880s through the 1920s. William Upham came to Wisconsin from Westminster, Massachusetts in 1853. He settled permanently in the fledgling community of Marshfield in 1879, where he established a sawmill, furniture factory, general store, and the first local bank. In 1894, he was elected the 18th governor of Wisconsin. At its peak in the 1890s, the furniture production branch of the Upham Manufacturing Co. employed a staff of 275. Its shipments of furniture, primarily bedroom sets and sideboards, to retailers across the United States was estimated at 30 railroad cars per month. |
