Description | Upright piano with four square pillars and three pedals. According to the Sheboygan County Historical Society, the piano was refinished ca. 1996. |
History | The S. W. Miller Piano Company was established in Chicago in 1896. In 1903, furniture manufacturer George B. Matoon brought Swan W. Miller and partner John F. Schwerin to Sheboygan, Wisconsin to operate the A. J. King piano works. In 1906, Miller and Schwerin officially incorporated the S. W. Miller Piano Company in Sheboygan. A 1927 article in the Sheboygan Press described the company's strategy of direct marketing: "During the earlier years of its business the company sold its output to dealers throughout the country, but owing to the advent of many other factories springing up in different parts of the country, which resulted in keener competition and consequent heavier operating expense, a policy was adopted whereby the instruments were sold from the factory direct to the user." In 1930, the firm went bankrupt and closed. |
