| Description | "Early Reminiscences of Janesville" by Henry F. Janes, recounts Janes' travels and exploration through eastern Wisconsin in 1835, his attempts to claim land, and the founding of Janesville. He first attempted to claim land before the survey, which left him with an invalid claim for land reserved as a school section. Undaunted, he set out on foot, with little water, no food, and no shelter, walking through Troy, Waukesha, Rock Prairie, Turtle Lake, and Fort Atkinson. After staking a valid claim and building a ferry across the Rock River at Janesville, he filed petitions for roads leading in and out of Janesville, mail routes, and other infrastructure that established Janesville as a major way point.
