| Description | "The Territorial Census for 1836" by Reuben Gold Thwaites, describes the first territorial census taken for the area of Wisconsin as ordered by Governor Henry Dodge. The census was limited to those areas with considerable settlement in what is presently Wisconsin and some parts of Iowa because it was understood that the larger territory was only temporarily attached to Wisconsin. Complete information, including the sheriff, white population, slaves, and families are provided for Brown, Crawford, Iowa, and Milwaukee counties. (23 pages) |
