| Description | "Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War" by Alfred Augustus Jackson, pieces together the service of a young Lincoln, who served as a volunteer with the Illinois militia. Lincoln's role as a captain of the militia was modest at best; he never saw battle during the conflict. Jackson does argue that the leadership and humanity shown by Lincoln at this time set the stage for his political career. (19 pages) |
