| Description | A Journal of Life in Wisconsin One Hundred Years Ago: Willard Keyes was a young Vermonter who, impelled to explore the western U.S., ended up in Wisconsin in 1817. Passing through Albany, NY, Keyes met Constant Andrews who was coming to Wisconsin to settle in the colony of Petersylvania, a religious colony named after its leader Rev. Samuel Peters. Keyes agreed to come and settled in Prairie du Chien, where he taught school, helped to build and operate a gristmill and sawmill, and logged near Black River Falls. In 1819, Keyes left Prairie du Chien to raft down the Mississippi River. This diary, presented in two parts, the first here, recounts his time in Wisconsin. (24 pages) |
