| Description | The Original Typewriter Enterprise, 1867-1873: This essay describes in detail how C. Latham Sholes (1819-1890) and James Densmore (1820-1889) invented the typewriter in Milwaukee and promoted it. Sholes designed and built the device, while Densmore invested funds, secured patents, and coined the name. The article is based on unpublished correspondence, memoirs, newspaper accounts, and other primary sources. It concludes by comparing the typewriter's invention and manufacture to the sewing machine and relating the Sholes/Densmore machine to other mechanical writing inventions of the time. (16 pages) |
