| Description | Rufus King and the Wisconsin Constitution: King (1814-1876) was editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel and a Whig politician who played key roles in creating the Wisconsin constitution, in Milwaukee schools, as a Civil War general, and in U.S. diplomacy. After a short summary of King's career, this essay provides an in-depth analysis of the constitutional convention of 1846, King's role in defeating its provisions at the polls, and his contribution to the 1848 constitution that ultimately passed. The article is not just a survey of King's part in these dramatic events, but also an excellent short overview of the most important issues discussed in the constitutional conventions, 1846-1848.
