wisconsin magazine of history spring 1951 william albert titus 1868-1951 the death of the honorable william a titus at his home in fond du lac february 2 has deprived the state his torical society of the wise counsel of its elder statesman a curator from 1920 to his latest hour the society honored him and itself by electing him president for two three-year terms 1940-1946 senator titus deserved well of his state he was a business man of high probity a state senator 1920-1928 a member of the university board of visitors 1913-1923 and of the school board — twice president — of fond du lac 1913-1922 in these and many other positions he rendered constructive service which will long be remembered for example as senator he was the author of the constitutional amendment ratified by the people in 1924 which is the cornerstone of the activities of the state conservation commission his service to his fellows was animated by love — love for the people of eden town ship in which he grew to manhood for those of the county and city of fond du lac for the commonwealth and its higher life abraham lincoln was his hero and his outstanding col lection of lincolniana documents his devotion mr titus knew that the memory of the deeds of our ancestors encourages us to high endeavor that history is the great custodian of human values he was not content merely to teach this he backed it up with deeds he is the author of several historical books and of many historical articles which were published through the years in the great newspapers of our state and especially in this magazine he lived confidently and fruitfully to the end of his earthly pilgrimage witness these lines from his little volume of vagrant verses fond du lac 1944 : we greet our autumn years as golden in their worth-while joys when service to the world employs our time as winter nears madison g c sellery 144
