| Description | Historic Spots in Wisconsin: Ceresco, A Pioneer Communist Settlement: This article explains how a group of reformers headed by Warren Chase (1813-1891) came together in Kenosha in 1844 to launch a utopian community. Based on the teachings of French economist Charles Fourier (1772-1837), they organized into a Phalanx by purchasing shares in a commune called Ceresco, which they located at Ripon, in Fond du Lac Co. at the end of May, 1844. The article describes how they shared labor and governance in common, provides statistics on crops, finances, and similar details, and explains why in 1850 they disbanded. (5 pages). |
