Official railroad map of Wisconsin, 1906 / prepared under the direction of John W. Thomas, Railroad Commissioner.
Railroad Commission of Wisconsin.
The state authorized a Railroad Commissioners’ Dept. in 1874 and in 1882 it issued the first official Wisconsin railroad map. These were published every two years to show fundamental transportation and geographic data. Like modern state highway maps, they served citizens as the basic reference map of the state. This example, from 1906, is typical of the series, and contains a large inset with economic statistics at the lower left.
